Huckabee wins Values Voters’ straw poll

Monday, September 21st, 2009

By: Ralph Hallow

HuckabeeFormer Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Saturday won a 2012 presidential-preference straw poll of social and religious conservative activists from 49 states gathered in Washington, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said at an afternoon press briefing at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.

It was sweet revenge for Mr. Huckabee, who narrowly lost a similar poll in 2007 to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Only in-person voting was permitted in this vote Mr. Romney had won with combined Internet and in-person voting.

On Saturday, Mr. Huckabee took 28.48 percent of the vote, while Mr. Romney was in a four-way tie for second place with Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Indiana Rep. Mike Pence. All four won 12 percent of the vote in rounded numbers.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich placed fifth. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas and the “undecided” option finished with less than 4 percent each.

Abortion ranked first among issues of concern to straw-poll voters, getting 41 percent of the vote, with protection of religious liberty second with 18 percent.

Opposition to same-sex marriage was third at 7 percent. Prayer in public schools, once a major concern among religious and social conservatives, ranked a surprising 10th place in the poll. The issue has dropped off the radar in recent years as more conservatives, including summit participants, school their children at home or send them to private or parochial schools.

Pawlenty: GOP surge if health plan fails

Friday, August 14th, 2009

By: Andy Barr 55011472

CHICAGO – Minnesota GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty took an aggressive line against President Barack Obama’s proposed health care overhaul Friday and insisted that a rejection of the Democratic plan could usher in a Republican resurgence.

“It appears that President Obama is making great progress on climate change, he is changing the political climate in the country back to Republican,” Pawlenty said during a speech to the second annual GOPAC conference in Chicago.

“He went around the country last fall promising ‘change we can believe in,’ but now we see it’s about changing what we believe in,” said Pawlenty, an anticipated 2012 Republican presidential contender. “We need to be calling out the flaws and misguided decisions of the Democrats in Congress and the Obama administration.”

Pawlenty characterized Obama as an “extreme left liberal” proposing a health care plan “that we don’t recognize as supporters of the free market.”

“Medicaid is essentially bankrupt, Medicare is essentially bankrupt, why the heck would we give the federal government another entitlement program to manage?” asked Pawlenty.

The Minnesota Republican threw a number of red-meat lines to the audience of GOP state legislators, including a slam directed at MSNBC “Hardball” host Chris Matthews.

“The only thing growing faster than the federal deficit and debt is Chris Matthews’ man crush on Obama,” Pawlenty joked.

Pawlenty, who became vice chairman of the Republican Governors Association following South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s resignation as the group’s chair, projected GOP wins this fall in the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races and anticipated those victories would spring board the party to success in 2010.

“We already are seeing the Republican resurgence in this country, but it is going to be affirmed and we are going to get great momentum from the victories we’re going to have in New Jersey and Virginia this fall,” Pawlenty said.

Pawlenty’s On the Trail and Traveling Light

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Heading to San Diego for a speech that would define him as a presidential contender, Gov. Tim Pawlenty brought no entourage — just a suit bag, slung over his shoulder as he boarded the plane.

An unpaid advance man, former White House aide Alex Conant, would be waiting for him on the West Coast when he arrived. Meeting at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, they would constitute the extent of the Pawlenty political organization on the ground.

He’s on the trail and traveling light

Tim Pawlenty’s political organization is ad hoc so far. But he’s getting his name out where it matters as a lower-key, fresh face in the GOP.

Pawlenty vs Romney On Health Care

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has rapidly moved to become a leading voice within the Republican party on health care and, in the process, has taken a series of shots at former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s handling of the issue in Massachusetts.

In a July 27 letter to the Minnesota Congressional delegation, Pawlenty compared the current federal plan being considered to the legislation passed in Massachusetts, noting: “That state’s experience should caution Congress against this approach.”
